Kind-hearted woman rescues dog and takes it to shelter while trying to contact owner, shocked when the dog's owners angrily confront her, blaming her for new shelter fees, ignoring the dog's repeated escapes: 'Guilt-trip me into offering to pay'

Trying to make sense of this story is like trying to put a puzzle together, except each piece belongs to a different picture. No matter how much you push and shove the pieces together, they just don't create a perfect, clear-cut story. This kind-hearted woman is on her way to work when she spots a dog in the road, alone and confused. She stops her car, debates the work detour this will cause her, yet decides to help the dog anyway. With no collar on the dog, she decides to take it to a shelter.

To her surprise, they find the dog is microchipped and contact the owner. A sense of pride washes over her as she takes time out of her day to do the right thing and help reunite this pup with its pup-parents. But the good deed high doesn't last long as she calls the owners to inform them of their pet's whereabouts, their response is anything but expected. The owner begins reprimanding her, blaming her for taking their dog to a shelter that will now charge them fees to get the dog released.

She was just trying to do the right thing, yet now she's being treated like a dog's bone: chewed up and spat out.

  • One of my cats got out ONCE 3 years ago (we did find him, thank God), and the experience was so distressing and scary that I immediately installed a high pet gate separating my foyer from my living room.

  • ApprehensiveBook4214 NTA. A dog getting loose repeatedly shows the owner is irresponsible. Since she has a toddler why doesn't she have a gate blocking the front door to stop both dog and toddler from escaping? (I know you don't know. Just pointing out there's solutions for that issue). However, in the future if someone is yelling at you just hang up.

  • TheSuper Nintenderp Seems like the fees they had to pay last time were to cover spay and microchip. So even if that's true they shouldn't have to pay again? I suspect they thought they could get you to offer to pay them for these nonexistent fees so they could get some money out of you. Nta

  • Jarlena_kissy-kissy You went above and beyond. A lot of people wouldn't have dedicated the time and effort to help an animal, and would have gone straight to work. Like you said, the dog has a history of getting loose. If they can't afford to get their dog back again, it's probably for the best. She sounds like she is trying to guilt trip you into helping her pay to get her dog back. She's being a horrible human being.
